How To Begin Buddhism – Buddhism is a religion founded by Siddhartha Gautama (“Buddha”) in India more than 2,500 years ago. With about 470 million adherents, scholars consider Buddhism one of the major world religions. Its practice was historically most prominent in East and Southeast Asia, but its influence is growing in the West. Many Buddhist ideas and philosophies overlap with those of other religions.

How To Begin Buddhism
Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, later known as “Buddha”, lived in the 5th century BC.

Gautama was born a prince into a wealthy family in present-day Nepal. Though living a peaceful life, Gautama was moved by the suffering of the world.
He decided to give up his life of luxury and face poverty. When that didn’t work for him, he promoted the idea of the “middle way,” meaning an existence between two extremes. So he sought a life without indulgences, but without privations.
After six years of searching, Buddhists believe Gautama attained enlightenment while meditating under the Bodhi tree. He spent the rest of his life teaching others how to attain this spiritual state.
As Gautama around 483 B.C. died, his followers began to form a religious movement. The Buddha’s teachings are the basis of what would later become Buddhism.

In the 3rd century B.C. BC Ashoka the Great, the Maurya Emperor of India, made Buddhism the state religion of India. Buddhist monasteries were built and missionary work encouraged.
Over the next few centuries, Buddhism began to spread outside of India. Buddhist ideas and philosophies vary, and some adherents interpret the ideas differently than others.
In the sixth century, the Huns invaded India and destroyed hundreds of Buddhist monasteries, but the Vandals were eventually driven out of the country.
There are many forms of Buddhism around the world today. The three main types representing specific geographic areas are:

Each of these types respects specific texts and has slightly different interpretations of the Buddha’s teachings. There are also several sub-divisions of Buddhism including Zen Buddhism and Nirvana Buddhism.
Buddha’s teachings are known as “Dharma”. He taught that wisdom, kindness, patience, generosity and compassion are important virtues.
The Buddha taught his followers that the cessation of suffering as described in the Four Noble Truths can be achieved by following the Eightfold Path.
In no particular order, the Eightfold Path of Buddhism teaches the following ideals for ethical conduct, intellectual discipleship, and the attainment of wisdom:

The Dalai Lama is a leading monk of Tibetan Buddhism. Followers of the religion believe that the Dalai Lama is the reincarnation of a previous lama who agreed to be reincarnated to help humanity. There were 14 Dalai Lamas worldwide.

Buddhism arose in northeastern India sometime between the late 6th and early 4th centuries B.C. BC, a time of great social change and intense religious activity. There is disagreement among scholars about the dates of Buddha’s birth and death. Many modern scholars believe that the historical Buddha lived from about 563 to 483 BC. Many others believe he lived about 100 years later (about 448 to 368 BC). At that time in India there was much dissatisfaction with the sacrifices and rituals of the Brahmins (Hindus high caste). In Northwest India there were ascetics trying to create a more personal and spiritual religious experience than found in the Vedas (Hindu scriptures). In the literature that emerged from this movement, the Upanishads, one can see a new emphasis on renunciation and transcendental knowledge. Northeast India, less influenced by Vedic traditions, became the breeding ground for many new sects. The society of this region was troubled by the destruction of tribal unity and the expansion of several small kingdoms. Religiously, it was a time of doubt, turmoil and testing.
A proto-Samkhya group (i.e. based on the Samkhya school of Hinduism founded by Kapila) was already well established in the area. New sects emerged, including various skeptics (e.g. Sanjaya Belattiputta), atomists (e.g. Pakudha Kakakayana), materialists (e.g. Ajita Kesakambali) and antinomists (i.e. those opposed to rules or laws e.g. B. Purana Kassapa). The main sects that arose during the Buddha’s time were the Ajivikas (Ajivakas), who emphasized the rule of fate (
) and the Jainas, who emphasized the need to free the soul from matter. Although Jains, like Buddhists, are often considered atheists, their beliefs are actually more complex. Unlike the early Buddhists, both the Ajivikas and the Jains believed in the immortality of the elements that compose them.
