How To Begin Knitting

By now you know I love knitting, but lately I’ve been enjoying crocheting too. I used to be very intimidated by knitting because my first attempt was Disaster. About two years ago, after seeing many beautiful sweaters on Instagram, I decided to give it another go and this time I wasn’t going to give up! It took me a few tutorials with my mom and several YouTube videos, but it finally worked!

I loved my knitting practice so much and started making patterns. A few this year. Now I want to help you learn to knit too! Below I will share 3 tutorials that will cover the basics of knitting to get you started.

The first thing you need to do when starting a knitting project is to cut (CO) your stitches. There are many different casting methods but my favorite is the Long Tail Cast On. It may take some practice to master so I recommend watching the video a few times until you feel comfortable.

Long tail cast on got its name because you have to start with a long tail of yarn. It will take some practice to figure out exactly where you should leave the tail for a larger project, but for this example, a foot or two of yarn should be more than enough.

Make a yarn over and slip it onto the right needle. Make sure your long tail is in the front and the working yarn is in the back. Using your left hand, insert your thumb and index finger between the tail and the working yarn. Then grab the working thread and the tail end with three fingers of your left hand. Then raise your thumb and index finger apart.

Then take your right needle down and slide it under the first thread around your thumb. Turn your left hand slightly and then insert the right needle under the string around the index finger. Then put the needle back through the loop on the thumb. Pull the end of the yarn and let the loops fall from your thumb and forefinger and the stitches will slide down onto your needle. Repeat this process until you have cast on the desired number of stitches on your right needle.

When you have cast the desired number of needles on your needle, turn it so that the point faces to the right and you can start knitting.

For knitting, you want to make sure that your working yarn is always facing your work. Then take your right needle and insert it from left to right (also called knitting) through the next stitch on your left needle. Wrap the working yarn around the needle from back to front (also called wrap, wrap) and then Pull the yarn over the stitch, then push the stitch off the left needle.

Repeat this process for each stitch on the left needle, until all the stitches are then on your right needle, then turn your work and you are ready for the next row.

Essential Tools For Beginning Knitters

If you continue to work only knit stitches, you will end up with what is called a garter stitch and it will look like the example on the right in the picture below.

The second basic stitch in knitting is called the purl stitch. When purl stitches, you want your working yarn in front of your work. Then insert the right needle from right to left (also called purl) through the seam on the left needle. Wrap the working yarn around the right needle from back to front, then pull the yarn through the seam. Pull the stitch off the left needle and you have a purl stitch ready.

Knitting rows and rows of repeated purl stitches will result in a stockinette stitch or a backward stockinette stitch depending on which side is the right side. Stockinette stitch will look like traditional knit stitches and will consist of a small “v”. The reverse stockinette stitch is the other side and will look like a little dashed line.

When your work is done, you need to remove the pieces from the pins. This is called unbinding. It is a simple and common process and is usually done on the knit side of the work. Mr.

Start by knitting the first two stitches. You have two stitches on your right needle. Using your left needle, just slip the first stitch over the second stitch. This is done by inserting the needle from left to right into the first stitch and then carefully pulling the second stitch through the first stitch and lowering it. Then knit another stitch from the left needle and repeat. Continue throwing stitches until only one stitch remains. Cut your thread and pull it to the end. You will see a nice row of “v’s” running across the top of your piece.
