The Master Chief Collection for PC adds another classic game to its ranks, and the arrival of Halo 3 brings with it incredible performance, the best support for high refresh rate games and even better improvements to the existing games in the collection. Aside from the fact that a really great game is now available for PC gamers, what I particularly like about this release is that running it in 4K 60fps actually gave me a much better appreciation for some of the technical achievements of the original game. up to 720p Xbox 360 native resolution.

While I clearly remember Halo 3’s visual shortcomings, such as the character modeling and choice of animation, sound, and lighting techniques, revisiting the game at a higher resolution and frame rate serves to free the original assets from the Xbox 360’s technical limitations. While the console lacks a significant amount of system RAM—by today’s standards, of course—Bungie made up for it by applying plenty of stickers and tile leveling details to many of the game’s assets. Many details that you would miss on modern 4K PC hardware have been addressed, such as scratches on metal or highly detailed ground textures. Upon closer inspection, I was surprised to find that Halo 3 very rarely uses an offset blur map or a rudimentary parallax map on some textures. All this was in 2007, just hidden behind low resolution and fuzzy anisotropic filtering – not a problem for modern technology.

This new release also has some decent updates, such as a view slider and an enhanced graphics option that provides visuals that surpass the Xbox One version of the game. Halo 3 won’t get a complete overhaul like its predecessors in the Master Chief collection, but like the other PC ports, you can increase the draw distance of static and dynamic world objects. Dynamic models, such as enemy corpses or small objects, are displayed further away from the camera. This also applies to elements such as grass, but even the standard starting distance for grass is not bad. In addition to the integrated graphics, you also have a performance mode that reduces the draw distance to a very close range to the camera – useful if you have a very old computer.
If you’re limited in GPU, going from advanced to stock gives about a four percent performance gain, and going full distance gives a 17 percent performance gain over advanced settings. This effect tends to have a more varied effect on CPU performance, which I tested by playing the game at 720p and leaving the GPU underutilized. Here, switching from enhanced to native graphics increased CPU performance by 24 percent, while switching from enhanced to normal mode increased CPU performance by 55 percent. However, Halo 3 is a very CPU light game – with the Ryzen 9 3900X pushing 400fps and barely touching most of its cores, I think any modern CPU would have a blast playing this game.
GPU requirements are also minimal as long as you have DX11 support, and our main graphics powerhouses – Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1060 and AMD’s Radeon RX 580 – easily run the game at over 60fps at 4K resolution. However, the lighting system requirements make this game ideal for a high refresh rate display with a very good chance of scaling the screen to 240Hz or higher. And it works. Previous releases of Halo have had issues with frame rate interpolation, meaning the game can run at over 60fps, but the animations ruin the HFR experience.
But with Halo 3, I played the game perfectly at 120fps, with almost every element of the game animating at full framerate. Only two things stood out: the Brute’s plasma shots and sharp shots don’t render properly above 60fps, and the distorted animations also seem to be locked to 60fps, looking quite jerky in the process, while the rest runs at 120 frames per second. Other than that, the game runs pretty much flawlessly – the animation issue seems to have been fixed, and a small patch shows that it can fix some less-than-perfect areas I’ve noticed. Given that Halo 3 has a lot in common with Halo Reach and ODST, the developers took lessons learned from the frame rate interpolation used in that game to go back and fix Halo Reach, so the animation is still above 60fps.

While the graphics remain the same between Xbox 360 and PC, resolution and performance are the main differences.
There is more good news. While Reach still doesn’t render at 60fps, its audio issues have largely been fixed. By the way, Reach suffered from a weird audio dropout issue that meant the game didn’t sound nearly as crisp and dynamic as the original Xbox 360 version. The good news is that Halo 3 sounds great, and Reach is a huge improvement. It doesn’t quite live up to the original release, but the main issue has been fixed and it sounds much better as a result. Along with the audio update for Reach, the latest patch from the Master Chief Collection also adds additional weapon skins for Halo: Combat Evolved. In general, these weapon textures increase the resolution of assets on weapons that have a lot of compression artifacts or very low resolution.
Back to Halo 3. It’s just a great release – bugs are minimal and the performance is a great example of how a 2007 game should scale to modern hardware. My only regret is the lack of HDR support. According to the Steam page for Halo 3 ODST, this game should include HDR – so maybe Halo 3 will get an HDR update with this release at some point. It’s a small gripe, but one that I really wish had been addressed – especially since HDR internal rendering has been a major focus for Bungie.
The good news is that the issues with Halo 3 are minimal and do not hinder the gameplay and true enjoyment of the classic 2007 game. I just hope that this is a sign of the future, that the frame rate interpolation fixes here will return to other games in the Master Chief collection, and that features like HDR and true split-screen multiplayer will be added to the PC game. also. 343 is still a work in progress, with major issues still to be resolved before it moves on to release a new game, but the direction is unmistakable: the competence in conversion work is getting better with each Halo and better with each new release, and while it lacks the ambition of its predecessors anniversary editions, the original game is still good.
