7. We used solid pine doors with rosettes to frame three bookshelves. We used grooved moldings around the bookcases, leaving space for outlets in each corner. In this case, we needed six bases (bottom plinth), 12 rails (horizontal stripes) and six racks (vertical stripes). First we cut out each size template to make sure each unit is the same. To cut the molding to size, we placed templates on the various parts of the molding and then marked the molding with a pencil. We used a cutoff saw to cut the moldings to size.

After I built both lower cabinets, I placed them in the corners of the room and attached them to the wall with nails and a few screws. You must be sure to screw and nail the wall studs. I added trim around the top of each one. I used two 1×2 pieces with a bevel on the corner.

Once I nailed a wardrobe in the corners. It’s time to add tall vertical boards for the shelves.

For these three parts, I used 1x8s. I nailed the two sides in place and then added the top piece.

Then I added two other vertical boards. After making sure they were all even, I nailed them into place.

I then added 1×4 vertical pieces to the front of the shelves as shown in the image above.

Since I wanted the bookshelf to reach the ceiling, I added 1×12 at the top. It would also allow me to install sconces above each shelf. I also added a 1×2 for the header and for a little extra detail.

I chose stationary shelves. I haven’t seen us ever have to adjust their placement. So I used 1×8 for each shelf and 1×2 for the front to add thickness to the shelf and make them flush with the side of the 1×4.

I made the doors for this bookcase, but showing you how to do it is a tutorial in itself. If you have a good router table, you can try it yourself. Another option is to hire a local lumber merchant to build doors for you. All you have to do is tell them the style and dimensions you want, depending on how much overlay you want.

After the bookshelf was ready, it was sanded, all the holes were sealed, and all the seams were sealed. I asked our finishing team to fit skirting around the bottom of the cabinets and molding on top.
